When you choose to participate on Columbia Giving Day, your gift becomes part of something bigger. The generosity of thousands of Columbians—from students to University Trustees—will add up to make a big difference for our students, our faculty, and our world. And thanks to our Trustees, more than $400,000 in matching funds will be distributed to our schools, programs, and initiatives, based on their performances in our hourly challenges, day-long competitions, and special contests.
Hourly Challenges
Matching funds are distributed throughout Giving Day based on the outcome of competitive challenges.
- The school, program, or initiative with the most gifts in a single hour.
- The 10,493rd gift on October 21 (surpassing last year’s gift count)
- 21st #ColumbiaGivingDay hashtag in a single hour

Raising the Bar Challenge
Columbia raised the bar by introducing the first Giving Day to the Ivies. We raised it again by setting giving records in 2013 and 2014. Can we do it again this year? Each school and program that surpasses its total number of 2014 gifts will earn a spot on the “Raising the Bar” leaderboard. Every school or program on the leaderboard will earn a bonus, and the school or program with the greatest percentage increase in gifts over 2014 will win even more!
Main Match Challenge
Supporting your favorite schools and programs is not only about pride—it’s about making the difference you want to see in the world. Matching funds will be given to the schools, programs, and initiatives that raise the most dollars on Giving Day.
Alumni Participation Challenge
By making a gift, you make your voice heard and show your support for the school that matters most to you. And to make your gift go further, the five schools with the highest participation percentages will win additional matching funds.
